More than one billion people do not have access to safe drinking water. As a result, thousands of children die every day from diarrhea and disease, and many more are weakened by illness. Inadequate and unsafe water is one of the main causes of diarrhea — the second largest killer of children under five years old.

UNICEF works in more than 90 countries around the world to improve access to safe, clean water. Specifically, UNICEF builds wells for communities, provides water pumps, water quality testing kits, water purifiers and water tanks, and teaches communities how to use and maintain the equipment in order to achieve a sustained solution.
